Postural risks: focus on the trunk and weekly variations

Around 200 analyses a day have been carried out with LEA for over 2 years. This gives us a high visibility of postural risks in the workplace.Through this newsletter, we offer a window into postural assessment in the workplace. Join us so you don't miss out on our exclusive information.

Today we present an analysis of the postural risks associated with the trunk and the variations observed over the course of a working week.

Among the situations analysed with LEA, 20% were considered to be high risk and 16% very high risk for the trunk.

This means that the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the back is high or very high in 36% of the cases analysed.

Now let's look at the details of the daily variations:

This analysis was carried out by aggregating the average postural risks for the trunk. For each day of the week, we calculated the percentage of analyses for which the risk to the trunk was considered risky or very risky. The risk is assessed using the RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) method.

Postural risks vary little from day to day. However, there is a small peak in risks on Wednesdays. This variation could be explained by two main factors. Firstly, the LEA assessments carried out by health professionals may target risk jobs more often on Wednesdays. Secondly, because of the way weeks are organized, the pace of production could also peak in the middle of the week, thereby increasing exposure to postural risks.

Overall, the proportion of at-risk analyses is high, especially given that musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of occupational illness in Europe (EU-OSHA), and that they have a major impact on the quality of life of those affected.

Please note that these analyses are based solely on data collected with LEA. We are aware that, by their very nature, they tend to highlight risky situations, which may not fully reflect the reality of workplaces.

Nevertheless, when postural risks are identified, it is crucial to take them seriously, whether you are an employer or a worker.
